Extra Credit: On a slip of paper (without saying it in class) tell me what pitcher is shown above?
Class project -- Thursday and Friday this week
how slow can a pitcher throw a pitch and still make it to the catcher?
6 groups
pitcher, catcher, field, math/physics, leader, baseball
The following is a sampling of the list of questions each group is responsible for knowing. THE LIST IS NOT AN EXHAUSTIVE ONE. THERE MAY BE MORE QUESTIONS. Your teacher will choose the leaders, everyone else will break up into EQUAL groups and select a category.
Pitcher -- All things about the pitcher... How tall is the average MLB pitcher? Average arm length? Height at release point? Does type of pitch matter - release point? How much does the height of the pitcher affect the speed?
Catcher -- Average height of glove when in crouch? (average height of MLB player - at bat) How far back from the plate are they?
Field - What are the field specifications? Distances? Elevations? Average MLB game - day/night, elevation, temp?
Math/physics - What formulas do we need to know, and know how to use? Speed of gravity? Effect of air on baseball?
Leaders - In charge of how the groups work and interact. In charge of making sure the problem is solved and logged.
Baseball - What are the specifications of an official MLB baseball? -- Does it matter? Flight characteristics of different pitches? Rules regarding pitches versus reality? How do the seams affect flight?
